Renewals occur every three years based on a dental professional&#8217;s initial licensing date. You should document what you read, keeping the article if possible, and how long it took you to read it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A minimum of 20 hours<\/strong>\u00a0must be done in a classroom setting or in-person seminar, or by watching a live webinar that features an interactive segment. Recorded webinars do not qualify as classroom credit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up to 30 hours<\/strong>\u00a0of CE may be done online and through recorded webinars. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandental.org\/ce-courses\/#1596206538931-56cec69f-c4fc\">CE Courses<\/a> section for courses meeting these requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A one-time, one-hour course<\/strong>\u00a0in human trafficking recognition is required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opioid training. <\/strong>The state of Michigan requires dentists to take opioid awareness training <strong>before applying for your initial state controlled substance license<\/strong> and in order to renew that license. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandental.org\/Practice-Management\/Regulations\/Controlled-Substances\/Opioid-Training-Rule\/\">Click here for more information<\/a>. The MDA provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandental.org\/ce-courses\/mda-online-ce\/the-dentists-role-in-preventing-opioid-abuse-and-addiction-in-their-patients-who-require-pain-medication\/\">recorded webinar<\/a> that satisfies this requirement.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1757361828041{margin-bottom: 25px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Additional requirements<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #b72028;\"><strong>Updated!<\/strong><\/span> <strong>Implicit bias training:<\/strong> Three hours is required and can be taken in-person or virtually (live or on-demand). <strong>This training is in addition to the 60 hours of continuing education credits required for relicensure for dentists and the 36 hours of CE credits for registered dental assistants and registered dental hygienists.<\/strong> Please read the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandental.org\/news-you-need\/state-changes-rule-on-implicit-bias-training\/\">State Changes Rules on Implicit Bias Training<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CPR:<\/strong> In addition to the required 60 CE credits, dentists must also carry a current Basic Life Support CPR card at all times. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs requires a dentist possess current certification in basic or advanced cardiac life support obtained from an agency or organization that grants certification pursuant to standards substantially equivalent to the standards adopted in the Michigan Board of Dentistry Rule <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandental.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1979_2019-083LR_AdminCode.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R 338.11705(03)<\/a>. How the training is conducted (in-person or online) can be determined by the certification-issuing organization. Because CPR is a general education requirement, no CE credit is not granted for CPR courses.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>RDA\/RDH<\/h3>\n<p>(Three-year renewal requirements for Continuing Education.)<\/p>\n<p>RDAs\/RDHs are required to complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of CE over a three-year period. CE credits can be earned in the following ways:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up to 10 hours<\/strong>\u00a0can be obtained FREE by reading articles, magazines, etc. that are related to dentistry. Document what you read (keep the article if possible) and how long it took you to read it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minimum of 12 hours<\/strong>\u00a0have to be done in a classroom setting, or by watching LIVE webinars. Live webinars that are being watched after the live session has ended (IE watching it a week after it originally was broadcast) do not qualify as classroom credit, only as online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up to 18 hours<\/strong>\u00a0can be done online (courses must be approved by ADA, AGD or MI Board of Dentistry to qualify).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two hours<\/strong>\u00a0of the 36 credits required must be in pain management.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One hour<\/strong> in dental ethics and jurisprudence with inclusion of delegation of duties to allied dental personnel. <strong>NOTE: The new requirements must be met before any renewal on or after April 26, 2022<\/strong><strong>.
