Renewals occur on a rotating basis, so that one-third of the licensed dental population renews each year. Likewise, your\u00a0<a href=\"\/Practice-Management\/Regulations\/License-Renewal#controlled\">controlled substance license<\/a>\u00a0must be renewed every three years from the date it was first issued.<\/p>\n<p>Dental licenses expire on Aug. 31 of any given year. For the preceding three-year period, dentists must maintain records of CE activities and current CPR certification according to the rules of mandatory continuing education (MCE). Visit the\u00a0<a href=\"\/CE-Courses\/CE-Requirements\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CE Requirements<\/a>\u00a0area of the Continuing Education section for more information on CE requirements.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"online\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dentists should expect to receive an application from the state no later than six weeks out from the Aug. 31 deadline. Dentists should call the Bureau of Health Services at (517) 335-0918 if they did not receive an application by this date.<\/p>\n<h3>MIPLUS Licensing System<\/h3>\n<p>The state of Michigan has now switched over to MiPLUS, a new online licensing and regulatory database for health and occupational professionals in Michigan. This new system is administered by the Bureau of Professional Licensing within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. (American Express is not accepted.)<\/li>\n<li>License renewals are generally completed within a few days. A new dental license application\u00a0(<strong>never licensed in Michigan<\/strong>) can take up to six to eight weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Changing your name as part of the renewal process WILL slow down your renewal. Instead, follow these steps:\n<ol>\n<li>Complete the license renewal process with your former\u00a0name.<\/li>\n<li>Then log back in and select \u201cModify Your License\u201d to change your name.<\/li>\n<li>A free copy of a license with your new name will be emailed to you (hard copies are $10).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Licensees under the dentistry profession have until Aug. 31 to renew their license. Improvements are being made to the system every day. The longer you wait to renew, the chances are the easier it will be to renew.<\/li>\n<li>There is a 60-day grace period after the Aug. 31 deadline. The state is monitoring the situation closely and if there is still a large number of dentists that haven&#8217;t renewed, the state will waive the late fees associated with renewing after the deadline. LARA does not start informing insurance companies or moving lapsed licenses until after Oct. 30, 2019. So, dentists are still valid and licensed during the grace period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Online Renewal<\/h3>\n<p>The state of Michigan offers an online method of renewing your professional license. Internet license renewal is available for all of the professions which are licensed by the Bureau of Commercial Services or the Bureau of Health Professions. To renew your license via the Internet, follow the link below:<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"process\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/lara\/0,4601,7-154-89334_72600_72603_27529_27533---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of Michigan E-License Renewal<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Volunteer License<\/h3>\n<p>The volunteer license is available only for retired health professionals who were previously licensed to practice in Michigan, but who no longer have a current, active Michigan professional license. This license may only be used for the purpose of donating treatment and health care in Michigan to indigent and needy individuals or medically under-served areas. In order to obtain this license, doctors must complete the Volunteer License application available through the state of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/lara\/lara_volunteer_pkt_old_443052_7.pdf?20150219151925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VOLUNTEER LICENSE APPLICATION<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Process of license renewal<\/h3>\n<p>All dentists will receive a license renewal application from the Consumer and Industry Services Bureau of Health Services that includes the renewal for the controlled substance license. If a dentist is licensed to practice a specialty, he\/she will also receive a separate renewal application for their specialty. The applications look the same except one indicates its use is for specialty licenses.<\/p>\n<p>Dentists should expect to receive their application no later than six weeks out from the Aug. 31 deadline. Dentists not receiving their application by this time, have questions or are in need of a new copy of the application, should call the\u00a0Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs\u00a0at (517) 335-0918.\u00a0<strong>NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>This phone number connects to a voice mail system that will guide the caller to the appropriate selection. If a question is not answered using the voice mail system, press &#8220;zero&#8221; on the telephone to speak with an operator if one is available.<\/p>\n<p>Once a dentist completes the renewal application, it should be returned to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for processing. By submitting your license renewal application, you automatically attest to having complied with the mandatory continuing education requirements. Records must be maintained for four years from the date of application. Typically, 5 to 10 percent of each year&#8217;s license renewals will be randomly audited. At that time, records of MCE activities must be presented to demonstrate rules compliance.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"controlled\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Controlled Substance License Renewals<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to your state dental license, Michigan controlled substance licenses need obtained to prescribe controlled substances. These licenses need to be renewed everything three years.<\/p>\n<h4>Opioid Training<\/h4>\n<p>Before you renew your controlled substance license, or if you apply for an initial license after Sept. 1, 2019, you\u2019ll need to complete a one-time training on opioid awareness.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the state controlled substance license, prescribers also need to register with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. Links to both the state controlled substance licensure application and the DEA registration are below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/lara\/0,4601,7-154-72600_72603_27529_27548---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan Controlled Substance License<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/drugreg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drug Enforcement Agency License<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to dispense controlled substances, you will need a separate controlled substance license for each physical location, a DEA registration, and a Michigan Drug Control License:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/lara\/0,4601,7-154-72600_72603_27529_27548---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan Drug Control License<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, before you renew your controlled substance license, or if you apply for an initial license after Sept. 1, 2019, you\u2019ll need to complete a one-time training on opioid awareness.<\/p>\n<h3>Relicensure<\/h3>\n<p>Effective Oct. 8, 2014, amendments to the process dentists must follow to obtain relicensure were implemented by the Michigan Board of Dentistry. The complete licensure requirements appear below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014 MR 19, Eff. Oct. 8, 2014.<br \/>\nR 338.11704b Requirements for relicensure;dentists.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 1704b.<\/strong><br \/>\n(1) An applicant for relicensure whose license has been lapsed for 3 years or less, under provisions of section 16201(3) the act, may be relicensed by complying with both of the following requirements:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(a) Submitting a completed application, on a form provided by the department, together with the requisite fee.<\/p>\n<p>(b) Submitting proof of having completed within the 2 year period immediately preceding the relicensure application the number of hours of continuing education required in R 338.11701.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(2) An applicant for relicensure whose license has been lapsed for more than 3 years but less than 5 years may be relicensed by complying with all of the following requirements:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(a) Submitting a completed application, on a form provided by the department, together with the requisite fee.<\/p>\n<p>(b) Submitting proof of having completed within the 2-year period immediately preceding the relicensure application the number of hours of continuing education required in R 338.11701.<\/p>\n<p>(c) Passing the dental simulated clinical written examination developed and scored by the north east regional board of dental examiners, incorporated or a successor organization with a passing score required in R 338.11203(2).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(3) An applicant for relicensure whose license has been lapsed for more than 5 years may be relicensed by complying with R 338.11201.<\/p>\n<p>(4) In addition to meeting the requirements of this rule, an applicant who is or has ever been licensed as a dentist in any state or territory of the United States during the period that the applicant&#8217;s Michigan license is lapsed shall have his or her license verified, on a form supplied by the department, by the licensing agency of any state of the United States in which the applicant holds a current license or ever held a license as a dentist. Specific questions about volunteer licenses are addressed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(fdyp4hhhuql10zeiymiywhoi))\/mileg.aspx?page=getobject&amp;objectname=mcl-333-16184&amp;query=on&amp;highlight=volunteer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan&#8217;s Public Health Code<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To obtain a volunteer dental license in Michigan, you must follow these steps and meet specific requirements:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Retirement from Active Practice:<\/strong> You must be retired from the active practice of dentistry. Your active practice license must actually expire, and you must intend to cease practicing dentistry for compensation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application Process:<\/strong> The special volunteer license is now available through the state&#8217;s online licensing system, MiPLUS. You will need to apply through this system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility Verification:<\/strong> On the application, you will be asked to verify that you were previously licensed in good standing and to acknowledge that you will not seek or expect compensation for any services provided under the volunteer license.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Continuing Education:<\/strong> If you have been out of active practice for more than three years, you are required to document that, during the three-year period immediately preceding your application, you have attended at least two-thirds of the normally required continuing education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Licensure Fees:<\/strong> Licensure fees are waived for the special volunteer license.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where You Can Volunteer:<\/strong> The statute allows you to provide care at health facilities or agencies that serve primarily medically indigent individuals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewal:<\/strong> The volunteer license must be renewed according to state requirements, and you must maintain records of your continuing education and other compliance documentation.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"controlled\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Controlled substance license renewals<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to your state dental license, Michigan controlled substance licenses need obtained to prescribe controlled substances.
